Military history of the regiment

The Royal Welsh Regimental Museum in Brecon is a significant museum dedicated to the history of the Royal Welsh Regiments and its predecessors. The museum provides a comprehensive overview of the military history and many deployments of the regiment, which is over 300 years old. It displays a variety of exhibits that document the development and various phases of the regiment's military history from its early years to the present.

Exhibits at the Royal Welsh Museum

Among the notable collections are artifacts from both World Wars, especially from the First and Second World Wars, as well as an impressive collection of medals, including Victoria Crosses awarded during the Anglo-Zulu War. Another important part of the museum is the collection from the Zulu War, which is considered one of the best in the world.

Collection of medals and awards

The museum includes several exhibition rooms, including a collection of uniforms, weapons, and awards that reflect both the history of the regiment and warfare in general. Special attention is given to the stories of soldiers who received awards in combat and the events that shaped the regiment.

This is a very typical Regimental Museum; lots of medals, captured weapons, uniforms, etc. However, it's enlivened by details of the defence of Rourke's drift against the Zulus AND by some bits of uniform to dress up in - which kept our 8 yr old companions entertained as they crouched behind the machine gun!

A fantastic well maintained museum. Every artifact is clearly explained with careful detail adding a significant poignancy to a soldiers life. The staff there are extremely friendly without being intrusive, they provided us with additional knowledge to any exhibit we had questions about and took good care of my son too, who loved the whole experience also.

A wonderful museum, very informative, I was surprised but delighted by the amount of items on display, not just about the Zulu wars in Africa, but right throughout including the troubles in Northern Ireland. The display of weapons and medals is impressive, and it is somewhere that I will happily visit again. If you are interested in military history then this is definitely for you.

Really interesting little place, with very friendly helpful staff. If you are interested in Rorke's Drift and the Zulu wars, it is well worth a visit.

Brilliant. The most VCs in one engagement on display alongside period uniforms & weapons, a real treasure trove. If you've seen the film Zulu about the defence of Rorke's Drift you'll have an inkling of what's on offer, but something for everyone of all ages regardless of previous knowledge.
